Being autonomous is the ability to govern self and own affairs independently. If your car detects rain and operates the windscreen wipers on in its own, then it is not that stupid, it has some basic form of autonomy in it but how smart can it get?
According to wired.com, there are six levels of autonomy in a car,
#0 No Autonomy - Driver does all the operations.
#1 Driver Assistance - The driver does the steering, accelerating and decelerating.
#2 Partial Automation - Driver is the fallback for steering, accelerating and decelerating.
#3 Conditional Automation - Automated driving system does all the functions until human is required to intervene.
#4 High Automation - Automated driving system does all the functions within a geofenced area and weather restrictions.
#5 Full Automation - Automated driving system does all the functions with no weather or location restrictions.
If yours is a high level, it should be giving you some orders now and then, are you ready to obey that gorgeous machine?
