Homesick for the Unknown
There’s a cabin in the woods I’ve never seen, but I miss it like an old friend. I know the way the wooden floor creaks underfoot. I can hear the rain tapping against the roof at night. It’s strange, missing something you’ve never had, but I do.

I’m not alone in this. Many of us feel a pull toward places we’ve never set foot in. Some people long for the sea, others for a quaint village in Europe, or a small café tucked away in a busy city they’ve never visited. But why? Why do we feel homesick for places that don’t exist in our history, our memories?

Maybe it’s just nostalgia, or perhaps it’s something deeper. Sometimes, we get attached to an idea, an image, a feeling we’ve seen in movies or read about in books. Maybe I don’t really miss the cabin itself. Maybe I long for peace, solitude, the simplicity of life in the woods. The same way someone living in a city might long for wide-open fields, not because of the fields, but because they crave a slower pace, a breath of fresh air.

But what if it’s more than just a product of our imagination? Some researchers believe we inherit certain environmental preferences from our ancestors. Maybe it’s in our DNA to feel at home in the places that resemble the landscapes where early humans thrived. If my longing for the woods feels so natural, maybe it's not just coincidence. Maybe it’s a connection to something older than memory.

Or maybe, some places just belong to us—even if we don’t have the receipts to prove it. It’s a thought that tugs at the edges of belief, but some think our souls are drawn to certain places because we’ve been there before—perhaps in a past life, or through the memories of our ancestors. Have you ever stepped into a city for the first time and felt like you belonged there, like you were always meant to be? Maybe that’s the spirit of a place calling out, an invisible thread tying you to it.

Whatever the reason, I think these longings are more than just daydreams. They tell us something about who we are. So, if you feel that pull, embrace it. If you dream of a cottage by the sea, maybe your soul just needs more space to breathe. If you crave the energy of a bustling city, maybe your spirit is looking for new adventures. And if, like me, you long for a cabin in the woods, maybe it’s time to create a life that feels more like the quiet you yearn for. Perhaps the woods don’t have to be far away—they can exist in the way we slow down, in how we reconnect with nature, in the moments of stillness we choose to carve out.

So, tell me—where have you never been, but somehow miss? Maybe, if we share our longings, we’ll uncover something deeper about ourselves.
