The holidays are moments when the whole family meets up, puts aside their differences, and shows of to the young. Showing off was often the greatest part of Christmas growing up. Other than the new outfits it was an animal was slaughtered. The process often evaded the eyes of the children we always prayed to get older and view the process of how the goat became choma.
As the years went by we finally realized the kitchen area had similar duties. The chicken turned to stew. That realization turned every child into a helpful member of society. We fetched firewood, blew the fire, carried the water all in the name of slaughter moments.
As time went but we were finally invited to the long-awaited transformation. The chicken would soon be stewed. All smiles we were told to catch the chicken. The boys made it easy. As moved to the St stage all I remember hearing was hold the wings, shika mabawa wewe. Then it ren and we all ten. The screams, the horror, the zombie chicken running after 10 children. Unfortunately, the chicken was a headless chicken unfairly blamed for the mistake of 10 children who were eager to know how chicken turned into stew.
Fortunately, the chicken dropped dead within the compound but the rest of us stopped halfway into town hiding from a zombie chicken. The lesson learned and made each parent aware that as curious as we we're on good came from allowing curious silly children near adventures without adequate supervision. The upside that day was our parents enjoyed the chicken more due to fear that the zombie chicken would wake up.
On this festive season, I wish you happy holiday. May the new year bring joy and hope. Happy new year to all.
